What is a star map?

The night sky above a place on a specific night: stars, constellations, horizon, calculated for date and time. A night that connects you, under the tree.

Who is it for?

For the one person on the list you still have nothing for. Parents, partner, best friend, grandparents.

Which date?

For parents: their wedding day or the day you were born. For a partner: your first date or the proposal. For grandparents: the grandchild’s birthday. For friends: the evening you met.

Is the sky really accurate?

Yes. We calculate the positions of the brightest stars from the Hipparcos catalogue for place, date and time and draw the constellation lines — the sky exactly as you would have seen it with the naked eye that night. For your parents’ wedding day in 1989 too.

What do I write on it?

For parents: “Where your story began”, “Thank you for everything, since this night”. For a partner: “Our beginning”, “Since this evening”. For grandparents: the grandchild’s name and “Your sky”. For friends: “The evening we found each other”.

What does it cost?

€9.90, once. Two minutes after payment the print file is in your inbox, sharp from A4 to A2 and for 50 × 70 cm. No shipping, no subscription.

Will it arrive before Christmas?

Yes, always. Even on 24 December at 23:59. Nothing is shipped, so there is no shipping deadline and no parcel stuck at the depot.

How do I put a file under the tree?

Print and frame: copy shops, drugstores and photo services often print A3 in minutes, a frame costs from ten euros. Or print the preview as a card, add the download link and let the recipient choose size and frame.

Is there a free version?

Any stargazing app shows tonight’s sky for free. A poster of a past night, with place, names and coordinates, print-ready up to A2, costs €9.90 with us. Other providers charge between €30 and €60 plus shipping and waiting time. And printed posters often no longer arrive in time in December.

Star map or moon poster?

Star map if a place belongs to the story (wedding, meeting). Moon poster if it is a date without a place (birthday). For several people on the list, happily both.

What if I don’t love it?

Lumeries happiness guarantee: if you don’t love your poster, you get your money back. Just reply to your order email.

How your poster is made

From typing to a finished print: usually under an hour.

  1. Enter the date

Type in the date it is about — a wedding night, a first meeting, a birthday or an hour of birth. Any day between 1900 and 2032 works.

  2. Add names and place

Two names, optionally a place and a short line. The preview updates as you type, so you see the finished image immediately. No account needed.

  3. Buy and download

After paying €9.90 the download link arrives by email within minutes. The file is 300 DPI and stays available for one year.

  4. Print and frame

A4 works on any home printer with photo paper. From A3 upwards a photo service is worth it: roughly €4–6 for A3, €8–12 for A2. The 5:7 ratio fits standard frames from €5.

What you get

  • One image file at 300 DPI — sharp from A4 up to A1, plus 50×70 cm and 24×36 inches.
  • Within minutes of ordering, the download link is in your inbox. Nothing is shipped.
  • A 5:7 aspect ratio — fits standard frames from IKEA, a drugstore or any furniture shop.
  • Astronomically computed with the SunCalc library for your date and coordinates, not illustrated.
  • Dates from 1900 to 2032 — any date in that range works.
  • A live preview before you buy: what you see there is exactly the file you download.
  • One year of access to the download, up to 100 times — even if you lose the file.

Three designs — which one suits your wall?

All three variants share the same white typography and the same photorealistic moon phase. They differ only in the background — and therefore in how the poster feels in a room. You pick the design in the configurator and see it in the preview right away.

  • Midnight (default): deep night blue, almost black, with cool grey secondary text. Reads like a clear night sky and works with white walls, light wood, and both black and white frames.
  • Dark: neutral charcoal with no blue cast. The calmest variant — for monochrome interiors, concrete or greyscale walls, and black frames.
  • Blue: a visible navy blue with light-blue secondary text. The boldest variant — for Scandinavian, coastal, or colourful rooms and for oak or pine frames.

One file, nine sizes — dimensions, frames, print cost

The file is high-resolution enough to print every one of these sizes at a true 300 DPI. You are not locked in: print A4 for the shelf today and A2 for the living room later — from the same file.

Print prices are typical values from photo services such as Walgreens, CVS, Boots, dm or CEWE for matte poster paper (as of September 2026) and vary by provider and paper. Our tip: matte paper of 200 gsm or more — it does not reflect and lets the night sky look deep.

Frequently asked questions

What did the night sky look like on a specific date? The sky above a place can be calculated exactly for any date — star positions follow fixed astronomical laws. Date, time and coordinates together produce exactly one constellation pattern. Lumeries computes that for any date between 1900 and 2032 and renders it as a poster, from €9.90.
Is a star map like this astronomically accurate or just decoration? At Lumeries the actual sky view is computed: star positions, constellations and the horizon line for the coordinates and date you enter. No random patterns, no templates — two different dates produce two different maps.
Which date should you choose for a star map gift? Most often the night two people met, the wedding night, or a birth. Any date works where both people were in the same place — then the map really shows the sky they stood under.
What does a personalized star map cost?At Lumeries €9.90 as an instant 300 DPI download, printable up to A1. Physical sellers usually charge €25 to €70 plus shipping for comparable star maps — the difference is the printing, not the content.
How do I print the poster? The file is 300 DPI and prints anywhere. For A4 a home printer with photo paper is enough. From A3 upwards a photo service is worth it: printing A3 costs roughly €4–6, A2 around €8–12 at most providers. You upload the file there and either collect the print or have it delivered.
Which frame do I need for the poster? The posters use a 5:7 ratio and fit standard frames in A4, A3, A2 and A1 — everything you find at IKEA, a drugstore or a furniture shop. A plain frame in black, white or oak costs between €5 and €20 depending on size. A passe-partout looks more premium but is not required.
Which paper should I choose?Matte or satin suits these designs better than gloss and does not reflect behind glass. Photo services usually call it "matte" or "silk". A paper weight from 200 gsm upwards feels substantial and will not warp inside a frame.
How soon do I have the finished poster? The file arrives within minutes of ordering — nothing is shipped. How fast you hold the printed poster depends only on your printing route: at home immediately, at a copy shop often the same day, with mail-order photo services usually 1–3 working days.
